Men died in gunfight with each other on the Danforth

Two men, who died after a shootout on a Danforth sidewalk last month, killed each other, Toronto police say.

Homicide Det. Shawn Mahoney said Wednesday morning that Jonathan Khan, 21, and Shawn Chestnut-Reddick, 22, targeted one another in a gun fight on the evening March 19.

When the men randomly came across one another outside the Mediterranean Social Club at 2215 Danforth Ave., east of Woodbine Avenue, they quickly began fighting due to an ongoing feud.

The physical fight escalated when each man pulled out a gun.

Chestnut-Reddick received three gunshot wounds while Khan had seven.

Police say they shot at one another from a distance no wider than the width of the sidewalk.

Both lived in East York for many years and shared many friends and acquaintances, Mahoney said. But police do not know the exact nature of their dispute.

They were known to police.

One gun was retrieved at the scene, but the other was taken by a person who fled the scene.

Police are still looking for that person and the gun, and are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Police are praising the witnesses who came forward for helping to solve this case quickly.

“It was an excellent response form the people in that area,” Mahoney said.

These were the 14th and 15th homicides of 2014.
