Raptors forward Jonas Valanciunas charged with impaired driving

Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Ontario Provincial Police say they began investigating in Wasaga Beach following a report early Monday that a vehicle went through a drive-thru with open beer bottles visible.

Police say officers located the vehicle at a home, where they arrested Valanciunas, 21, alleging he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

Valanciunas is charged with having greater than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Valanciunas is in his second season with the playoff-bound Raptors, and is averaging 11 points and 8.6 rebounds a game.

He released the following statement: “I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously. I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them.”

The Raptors say the team takes the matter very seriously as it has the highest expectations for all members of the organization.

“We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation,” the Raptors said in a statement.

“At this time we are continuing to gather information and we will comment further when appropriate.”
