Pedestrian tunnel to island airport delayed

The opening of the pedestrian tunnel to Toronto’s island airport has been delayed.
The walkway to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport was scheduled to open in August, but the Toronto Star reports that it will now open later this year or possibly in early 2015.
An official from the Toronto Port Authority told the newspaper the brutal winter is responsible for the delay, saying “chunks of ice” slowed down construction.”
The tunnel project began in March 2012.
Once completed, the tunnel — located at a depth of 33 metres — will be the first underwater channel connecting to an airport anywhere in the world.
The two Canadian-built boring machines dubbed “Chip” and “Dale” began digging the 243-metre tunnel in June 2013.
Built completely through a public-private partnership, the project is expected to cost $82.5 million. The delay is not expected to cause a cost increase.
