Transformer explosion halts subway service for hours

An underground hydro transformer exploded near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue early Friday afternoon, knocking power out at Spadina subway station.

The outage disrupted service between St. Clair West and Union stations for several hours.

Trains were back up and running by around 3 p.m.

The cause of the blast hasn’t yet been determined.

Witnesses told CityNews the force of the explosion blew manhole covers into the air.

“All of a sudden I feel a rumble coming down underneath the ground and then a manhole went straight in the air like a spin-top,” one witness said.

No injuries were reported.
