Gov. Gen. launches campaign to encourage young Canadians to volunteer

OTTAWA – The Governor General is starting a national campaign aimed at getting more Canadians to volunteer.

David Johnston’s My Giving Moment has stories of Canadians helping others and he wants the campaign to keep the volunteering spirit alive.

He says the idea was sparked by a speech he gave three years ago, which noted the pillars of family and children, learning and innovation and philanthropy and volunteerism.

“To encourage each other to say, ‘I have a giving a moment, I have the opportunity to give,'” he told 680News.

He hopes it will encourage younger people to get involved.

“Hand the torch to young people. As we go through different stages in our life, our capacity to give in different ways will change.”

The website has stories of volunteering and sharing from across the country and Johnston hopes many more will be added.

“You will share it with hundreds and hundreds of people across the country and probably will encourage someone to say ‘hey, I can do that.'”

Johnston is no stranger to helping others — his family participates in the Terry Fox Run every year.

“All part of a family tradition of being conscious of these great individuals who’ve had their giving moments and then spread them across many others,” he said.

Rogers Communications — the parent company of this radio station — is a corporate partner helping the initiative.
