Relocation of Sam the Record Man sign referred to city staff

TORONTO – Toronto city council did not decide the future location of the Sam the Record Man sign Wednesday, sending the item to senior staff for further study.

The vote was 24-18.

Coun. Gary Crawford says council just does not have enough information to make a decision.

“I’m quite confident that the deputy city manager will be able to bring something back — hopefully — by the next council meeting,” he said.

“We’ll have everybody at the table so we’ll have a unified, solid support on a direction to go for this iconic sign that needs to be downtown, close to where Sam used to have his shop.”

Coun. Josh Matlow says he has heard the personal story of the Sniderman family about their journey through this from Bobby Sniderman, one of the sons of founder Sam Sniderman.

“He said that Sam sacrificed the store he loved to guarantee having the legacy he craved,” Matlow said.

He says allowing Ryerson University to renege on its agreement to put the sign up on its Yonge Street building is not what the family or the community wants.

Mayor Rob Ford had moved a motion that would have allowed Ryerson to put the sign up on Yonge Street or Gould Street or nearby.

When Ryerson bought the building, the university committed to preserving the sign.
