‘Toronto 18’ member died fighting in Syria: reports

A “Toronto 18” member — convicted for his role in supplying the terrorist group with weapons to launch a deadly attack in 2006 — has died in Syria, according to media reports.
Gun-supplier Ali Mohamed Dirie reportedly died fighting in Syria. It is not clear when or how he died.
According to a CBC News report, Dirie was able to leave Canada in 2012 and it is believed he used a passport that was not his.
He was sentenced to seven years in 2009 after pleading guilty to supplying the so-called “Toronto 18” with weapons to launch a deadly terror attack on several Canadian institutions, including the Canadian Security Intelligence Service headquarters and a military base.
Dirie was given credit of five years in pre-trial custody and was held in the Special Handling Unit in Quebec. He was released in October 2011.
Following his release, Dirie reportedly joined an extremist group in Syria, where he died, according to CBC News.
The report says his death was announced by a family member at a Toronto mosque.
