Ontario Tories widen lead over Liberals ahead of byelections: poll

TORONTO – The provincial Conservatives have widened their lead over the governing Liberals in advance of next week’s byelection race, according to a new poll.

Five byelections will be held in Ontario on Aug. 1.

The Forum Research poll — published in the Toronto Star — found popular support for the Liberals was down two points to 31 per cent, while the Tories increased their lead five points to 36 per cent.

The NDP sits back in third place with 27 per cent.

However, PC Leader Tim Hudak’s approval rating is the lowest of all three leaders, at 27 per cent.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s approval rating is at 43 per cent — almost 10 points higher than Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Meanwhile, another Forum Research poll — published in the Toronto Sun — found 45 per cent of those surveyed think the Liberals committed a crime by deleting e-mails related to the gas plant cancellations.

Also, 52 per cent said they believe Wynne knew about deleted e-mails by senior Liberal staff.

Lorne Bozinoff, the CEO of Forum Research, told 680News the Liberals were not able to contain the flow of damaging revelations.

“I think the worst part of this whole thing [is that] it’s come out in dribs and drabs, and if they had just got everything out quickly, including the deletion … should have had it come out all at once,” Bozinoff said.
