Mayor Rob Ford dropped as Don Bosco football coach

TORONTO – Mayor Rob Ford has been let go as coach of the Don Bosco Eagles football team.

A statement from the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Wednesday says Ford had been notified of the board’s “decision to pursue a different direction with a new volunteer head coach.”

The board told 680News that the decision is not related to the drug use allegations.

Instead, the board said Ford was let go due to an interview with Sun News.

In the March interview, Ford said the football players would not attend school had it not been for the team, that the players “come from gangs” and that the school is in a rough area.

“Mr. Ford has helped our students rise to the challenge and realize their potential as both football players and young men,” said Bruce Rodrigues, the director of education in a statement.

“This decision was based on what is best for our students, our school and the Don Bosco community.”

“It’s a negative image that we didn’t want,” Judy Collins, a member of the parent council, told 680News.

“Sadly, it came down in a week where he’s had an awful lot of stuff happen.”
