Brampton firefighter killed in Caledon crash

CALEDON, Ont. – A Brampton firefighter was killed in a collision on Hwy. 10 in Caledon Friday afternoon.

Howard Hughes, 50, of Orangeville was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brampton fire chief Andy MacDonald confirmed to CityNews that Hughes was a 23-year veteran of the force and was the lead piper in the honour guard.

Hughes was a father of two and popular among his fellow firefighters.

“It’s very upsetting. We’re a very tight-knit family and a close department,” MacDonald said.

“Howard was very outgoing, outdoorsman. He had his Harley and he loved to fish.”

“The best way to describe him is one of the good ones.”

The two-vehicle crash happened between King Street and Boston Mills Road around 4:15 p.m. Provincial police say Hughes was travelling southbound when “for unknown reasons, he entered the northbound lanes, striking a truck.”

The driver of the truck is in stable condition in hospital, provincial police said.

Hwy. 10 between Olde Base Line and King Street remained closed during the investigation.

Provincial police are investigating.
