Brampton trucker found not guilty of trying to smuggle drugs into Canada

WINDSOR, Ont. – A Brampton, Ont., truck driver has been found not guilty of trying to smuggle a large quantity of cocaine across the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit to Windsor, Ont.

Karamjit Grewal, 49, was charged with importing cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking after Canadian border officers found close to 70 kilograms of cocaine in a load of lettuce in April 2009.

The produce was heading to Cambridge, Ont., from California.

During the trial, Grewal denied any knowledge of the drugs but the Crown argued that Grewal owned the truck, was the only driver and had “unexplained wealth” for someone who worked as a trucker.

The judge found that even though she didn’t believe all the evidence given by Grewal, there was nothing that directly linked him to the cocaine.

Defence lawyer Pat Ducharme says it was a tough case for the judge but in the end, there was reasonable doubt.

Ducharme said Grewal will try to reclaim his citizenship card and his truck, which has been held since 2009.
