Man charged in fatal hit-and-run granted bail

TORONTO, Ont. – A 22-year-old man charged with fleeing the scene after he allegedly struck a well-liked Grade 2 teacher and cyclist was released on $40,000 bail Monday.

Miguel Oliveira surrendered Saturday one day after 35-year-old Tom Samson was killed while cycling in the west-end.

He was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death.

According to a CityNews report, Oliveira will be under house arrest but is permitted to go to work and meet with counsel. He is prohibited from driving.

Samson was crossing to the north side of Davenport Road from the east side of Lansdowne Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. Friday when he was struck by a minivan travelling westbound.

A second vehicle also struck him. The driver stayed at the scene.

Samson was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A funeral has been arranged for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at 76 Wychwood Ave. near St. Clair Avenue West and Christie Street.
