62 confirmed & probable cases of West Nile in Toronto

TORONTO, Ont. – There are now 62 confirmed and probable human cases of the West Nile virus in Toronto.

Five people remain in hospital, and four of them are in the intensive care unit.

In the 2012 season, there have been a total of 20 hospitalizations, but some have since been released.

In late August, the City of Toronto said it’s seen the highest number of reported human cases of West Nile in a decade.

While most people recover, the virus can have serious health impacts for seniors or people with compromised immune systems. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

The city’s medical officer of health, Dr. David McKeown, urged everyone to take precautions.
