Police watchdog investigating after woman struck and killed by police car

TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a woman was allegedly struck and killed by a police cruiser Saturday.

Witnesses at the scene told CityNews the woman was jaywalking near Woodbine Mall, however the SIU could not confirm that allegation.

“We have to determine that,” SIU spokesman Frank Phillips said when asked if the woman was jaywalking.

“As I mentioned, there were no crossovers here. There’s no traffic lights. There’s nothing controlling this. It’s a through road and there’s no allowance at this point for pedestrians to cross over.”

The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. on Highway 27, just north of Rexdale Boulevard.

The SIU said the woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, was crossing the road from east to west when she was hit. The officer driving the car had been leading a funeral procession at the time.

“She hit the front windshield of the car and tumbled over, he got out of the car and performed CPR on her,” said one witness.

Despite the officer’s attempts, the woman could not be revived.

The SIU probes incidents involving police that result in injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
