City council approves motion to fight bed bugs

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto’s City Council has unanimously approved a motion to spend $250,000 of the health budget on fighting bed bugs.

The city has also asked the province to match that amount, and commit to long-term funding for 2013 and beyond.

In May, the city’s bed bug eradication team was dismantled when Ontario’s one-time funding of $1.2 million ran out.

The team exterminated over 1,500 bed bug infestations, with a third of them in Toronto Community Housing units, according to staff estimates.
