Mayor Ford says he’s done with dieting as ‘Cut the Waist Challenge’ nears end

TORONTO, Ont. – Mayor Rob Ford has given up on his “Cut the Waist Challenge” three weeks early, admitting on his weekly radio show that he’s not dieting anymore.

Mayor Ford and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, began the public challenge on Jan. 1, 2012,  in an effort to encourage others to lose excess weight and raise money for charity.

The mayor aimed to trim 50 pounds off his 330-pound frame by June 18, when the challenge ends. At last count he was down 16 pounds.

Doug Ford has dropped nearly 30 pounds.

680News food and nutrition expert Rose Reisman said that most people on diets become vulnerable to defeat as soon as they start to plateau.

“They feel ashamed and they shouldn’t. They just have to realize that whatever they did didn’t work — let’s try again. But for him to give up now and say ‘that’s it’ that really bothers me,” Reisman said.

Earlier in May, the mayor’s office issued a news release saying the weigh-ins would take place every two weeks, instead of every Monday. However, he didn’t hold one last week.
