2 teens injured in drive-by shooting near Jane-Finch school

TORONTO, Ont. – Two teens were wounded in a drive-by shooting near Oakdale Park Middle School, located in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue West area, Thursday.

Police said the gunman targeted a 19-year-old man as he was walking out of the Oakdale Park Community Centre, shooting him several times at close range at around 10 a.m.

“It would appear that someone was waiting for someone to come out of the community centre when our, now injured, person came out of the community centre. He was a target of gun violence.” Inspector Randy Carter told 680News.

A teenaged girl, believed to be around 14 years old, was also wounded across the street, in front of the school on Grandravine Drive.

The male was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with serious injuries.

The young girl was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children, but police said she is in stable condition. Police said she was not a student at the Oakdale school, but have not confirmed her age.

Police also taped off the front of the community centre because some of the bullets went through the front glass of one of the doors that faces south.

Officers also placed some orange markers next to shell casings and other evidence.

Witnesses said after the suspect shot the 19-year-old man, the gunman opened fire on some girls on the sidewalk in front the school — as he was getting back into his car — and that’s when the female teen was wounded.

The event has some students at the school shaken and worried it may happen again.

“It was the most terrible thing you could have done outside of the school, putting a lot of kids lives in harm. They could come back at any time. I’m so scared I feel like that could happen.” A 12-year-old student at the school told 680News.

The Toronto District School Board said the hold and secure mode, which was in place after the nearby shooting, has been lifted for Oakdale Park Middle School, Yorkwoods Public School & Topcliffe Public School.
