City council to vote on garbage collection deal next week

City council is going to vote on the plan to contract out garbage collection for 165,000 homes next week.

Public Works Chairman Denzil Minnen-Wong said a proposed seven-year deal with “Green for Life” will save the city $78-million, more than originally thought.

“There was skepticism in certain quarters that savings couldn’t be found and actually we’re saving much much more and the taxpayers are the big winners today,” he explained.

The total savings could rise to $100-million.

“Green for Life” currently collects garbage in Hamilton and Durham region.
