Heels, gowns and ties: Stars gather for opening of TIFF

TORONTO, Ont. – Blinding bling, fancy clothes and expensive champagne were only some of the sights visible at Thursday’s lavish cocktail party at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, which preceded the grand premiere of the Toronto International Film Festival.

The chic gathering was hosted only hours before the debut of TIFF’s opening film, a highly anticipated documentary about rock band U2.

Entitled “From the Sky Down,” the documentary opens at 8 p.m. Thursday night at Roy Thomson Hall, where hundreds of fans were lined up hours in advance to get a chance to catch a glimpse of Bono or U2 guitarist The Edge.

“I got down here at 5, I’ve been a fan of (U2) since the War album,” said one fan named Gloria. “It’s the best film to open the fest.”

Using the international documentary as the opening film is a slight change of tactics for TIFF, which has primarily used a Canadian film to kick off the festival.

A big bash at Toronto’s Liberty Grand is planned for after the opening night film, and some rumours say Bono may just make an appearance.
