Mounties targeting distracted drivers this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Drivers: Get there safely.  That’s the message from RCMP across the province as they step up road enforcement this long weekend.

Sergeant Rob Vermeulen says officers will be staked out all across BC today.  He says, unfortunately, distracted drivers still aren’t getting the message.

“Every long weekend we want to encourage drivers to get to where they’re going safely.  In 2010, distracted driving was a contributing factor in 104 collision fatalities and we certainly don’t want that to happen to anyone.”

He explains the solutions for being safe are pretty simple.  “Don’t drink and drive, obviously have a designated driver and please don’t use your cell phone, unless you have the hands-free unit.  And don’t be fiddling with the GPS while you’re driving.”

Vermeulen says on any given day he still sees several drivers talking away on their cell phones, despite the hands free law having been in effect for over a year.
