Weekend events and resulting road closures

TORONTO, Ont. –  Those looking for something to do in the city this weekend should have no shortage of events to choose from. From the Science Centre to the Art Gallery of Ontario, there is something for everyone to enjoy, regardless of the poor weather.

Motorists heading out across the city should also be wary of the many road closures in place because of the numerous events, and ensure they plan accordingly.

Some of the most popular events this weekend include:

Doors Open Toronto
Architecture fans, and the just plane curious, can get an up close and personal look at some of the city’s most interesting buildings with “Doors Open Toronto.” The two day event allows people access to close to 150 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural or social significance around the GTA.

The Art Gallery of Ontario
At the AGO, the exhibit “Abstract Expressionist New York” opens on May 28 and contains works by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and many others. The pieces are from the Museum of Modern Art.

The Ontario Science Centre
Be dazzled by the power of weather in the new IMAX film “Tornado Alley” showing at the Ontario Science Centre.

Those heading out this weekend to enjoy some of the events may want to take the TTC as there are  several road closures taking place around the city.

The City of Toronto is reminding commuters to keep the following events and closures in mind:

Malvern Bicycle Race
Saturday closure:
• Brenyon Way from Sheppard Avenue East to Sewells Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 to accommodate this event.

Walk with Israel
Sunday closure:
• A number of partial closures will take place from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 to accommodate this event. The roads affected will be in the area bounded by Strachan Avenue in the west, Queen’s Quay in the south, Simcoe Street in the east and Adelaide Street to the north. Click here for the full route.

World Partnership Walk
Sunday closure:
•The formation and dispersal area for the parade will be at Metro Hall, 55 John St.
• A number of partial and full closures will affect King Street and Simcoe Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 to accommodate this event.
• University Avenue from Wellington Street to Queen’s Park Circle will be closed in both directions during this time.

Kensington Market Pedestrian Sunday
Sunday closure:
Parts of the following roads will be closed on Sunday, May 29 from noon to 7 p.m. to accommodate this event:
• Augusta Avenue
• Baldwin Street
• Kensington Avenue.

Criterium Bike Race
Sunday closure:
• Streets in the race circuit will be closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 to accommodate the annual bike race. The race, held in the vicinity of the St. Lawrence Market, will start and finish along Front Street East (in front of 39 Front St. E.). From Front Street, the riders will go left onto Scott Street, left onto the Esplanade, left onto Market Street and left again back onto Front Street.
