F-35 fighter jets cost estimation accurate, says Lockheed Martin exec

OTTAWA, On. – The Conservative government’s estimate surrounding the price of the F-35 fighter jets are accurate, according to the manufacturer’s executive Vice President Tom Burbage.

The Lockheed Martin Corporation expects the stealth fighters will cost $9-billion, plus an additional $250-million to $300-million a year for maintenance, The Toronto Sun reported.

Burbage told The Sun, servicing the jets would be done almost exclusively by Canadian firms, and added that Canadian aerospace companies could expect at least $9.5-billion in economic benefits.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer released a report earlier this year claiming the cost of the planes could be closer to $29-billion, but the government has defended its estimates.
