Prime Minister Harper pays tribute to Terry Fox, while discussing gun registry

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Just ahead of Sunday 30th annual Terry Fox run, Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited the monument for the runner, calling him a “true Canadian hero”.

Fox was forced to give up his cross-country run, which raised money for cancer research, just after he arrived in Thunder Bay in 1980.

He died the year after, with the first Terry Fox run being held that year.

While in Thunder Bay, Harper spoke with reporters about next week’s vote on the Long-Gun registry, saying his party will not rest until it is abolished.

He added that opposition to the “wasteful” and “ineffective” gun registry has only increased since its inception 15 years ago, and said it will definitely be abolished at some point in the future.

Harper has urged divided New Democrat MP’s to listen to their rural supporters.
