Statistics Canada approves scrapping long form census

OTTAWA, Ont. – Industry Minister Tony Clement confirmed Statistics Canada has signed off on his move to scrap the long form census, and send a voluntary questionnaire to more households instead.

However, the decision is angering many groups, who say it will leave the country without vital information.

Nevertheless, Clement said their complaints will not affect his decision, while adding “we always welcome when Canadians want to participate in the ongoing discussion of public policy issues.”

Clement says there is a good balance between opponents making their complaints on a short form census public, and those who have been quietly speaking to MP’s about their problems with the long form census.

As recently as the end of March 2010, Statistics Canada planned to use the traditional long form for their 2011 Canada-wide survey.
