Cedarbrae C.I. in city’s east end closed due to fire

TORONTO, Ont. – There is no school Thursday at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute in the city’s east end after a fire Wednesday night.
The school is located near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East.
Final exams at the school Thursday-Friday will be rescheduled, likely to be held at a different school.
When police arrived on the scene just after 10:30 p.m. they saw flames shooting through the school.
Officers arrested a 20-year-man who as he attempted to run away from the scene. He now faces arson charges.
There are reports the man charged was a former student.
Staff members told 680News the intense fire and the water used to put it out has caused serious damage.
“I just saw the front hall and water [is] all over the hall,” one staffer said.
Staff also said the large main office area was badly damaged.
