Police remind drivers and pedestrians to stay safe this long weekend

TORONTO, Ont. – Excellent weather is expected for the Easter long weekend and that means the city streets will be packed with motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Sergeant Tim Burrows with Toronto Traffic Services told 680News, people tend to take their attention off the roads when the weather warms up.

“Nice weather brings out, what people would consider, ideal driving conditions and maybe drivers get a false sense of security that they can stop better or steer better but we do see an increase of collisions during nicer weather.” said Sgt. Burrows.

Police are also reminding drivers to be aware that with the nice weather, a number of more vulnerable road users are out, such as cyclists, as well as an increase in child activity around playgrounds and school zones.

“Help protect the children.  They really need it.  They’re going to make poor decisions and as adults we should be in a position to make up for the poor decisions they may make.” said Stg. Burrows.

Pedestrians are also being reminded to be more aware of their surroundings this long weekend by using both their eyes and ears to stay safe when crossing the roads.  Police are concerned over the recent increase in pedestrian fatalities.

“What we’re going to ask drivers to do, and we regularly do this, is just pay a little more attention.  Go a little slower.” advised Sgt. Burrows.

According to CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss, record breaking temperatures are in the forecast for Good Friday and Saturday.
