Prime Minister sidesteps questions about possible fall election

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) — The prime minister is not dismissing the possibility of an election call as early as this summer.

At a transit announcement in Calgary, Justin Trudeau was asked if Canadians should prepare for a vote.

He didn’t say no.

“I think Canadians should be and can be expecting that their elected leaders work hard for them every single day,” he said.

There is growing speculation an election call could come as early as next month, as more Canadians are vaccinated and the Liberals have a healthy lead in the polls.

“I’m going to continue to focus on shortening people’s commutes and protecting their kids, and fighting climate change and creating good jobs. These are the things we were elected to do in 2019. These are the things we were elected to do in 2015. And there’s still a lot more to do. We’re going to keep working on it,” Trudeau added.

Trudeau did, however, deny his recent string of announcements is electioneering.

“The work we continue to do to deliver for Canadians as we come out of this pandemic is something we’ve been talking about and working on for a long time,” he said.

Ahead of a possible federal election, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he’s kicking off a Canada wide tour “to talk to Canadians about how the NDP has been fighting and will continue to fight for a future people can look forward to – more affordable, equal, hopeful, and secure.”
