Tory encourages Leafs’ fans to watch at home; Places bet with Montreal mayor

By News Staff

With the Toronto Maple Leafs opening their first round playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, the mayor is out with a reminder that fans should stay home to watch games.

Mayor John Tory joined Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Wednesday morning and said there could be opportunities for safe gatherings later this summer, but now is not the time.

“On the hopes that the Leafs are going to go into the playoffs deep, that means the reopening will have hopefully begun by then, there’s a possibility we could do some of that sort of thing,” said Tory.

“But for now, we are encouraging people to watch the game at home.”

If the Leafs go deep in this year’s post-season, they could be playing well into July.

Last summer, the Raptors held drive-in viewings of playoff games at Ontario Place.

Tory also announced he has made a friendly five part bet with Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante.

The stakes include bragging rights when all the big city mayors next meet and donations to charity.

The losing mayor has to send over a case of craft beer and Mayor Tory will be getting some Montreal smoked meat sandwiches if the Leafs win the series. If the Habs pull it out then a St. Lawrence Market peameal bacon sandwich heads to Montreal.

Most importantly, the winning team’s flag will have to be raised outside the losing team’s city hall.
