Peel Region is stepping up the pace of vaccinations next week, aiming to deliver 150,000 doses in what would be the district’s biggest one-week total so far.

As of Friday, just over 638,000 vaccine doses have been administered to date in Peel.

It says it’s on track to reach its target of 75 percent first doses earlier than expected and also reaching the provincial goal of 65 percent by the end of this month.

Peel says it’s adding approximately 10,000 appointments per week for all residents 18 and older who, as of Thursday, are eligible for a shot. They’re also extending hours at mass vaccination clinics and expanding pharmacy and primary care offerings.

“This upcoming week represents the most exciting moment of our vaccination campaign to date. Our plan’s next phase brings us closer to reaching our goal of having 75% of residents receive their first dose,” said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh.

“We know that stopping COVID-19 in Peel helps all of Ontario, and I encourage all eligible residents to get vaccinated without delay.”

Peel Region continues to report high daily COVID-19 cases with transmission rates also on an uptick.

According to the latest data, Peel’s COVID-19 case incidence per 100,000 (known as the seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in a public health unit) is 49.2; the highest in Ontario.

As of May 6, Peel Region says 44 percent of adults aged 18 and older have received at least one vaccine dose.
