Nanny’s condition improves after being struck by vehicle on St. Clair West

A woman being dubbed a hero for protecting two children she was caring for has non-life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a car in Toronto on Wednesday.

Police say it happened just before 11:30 a.m. near Boon Avenue and St. Clair Avenue West.

Duty inspector Michael Williams says a vehicle ran off the roadway and struck the woman. It then collided into a storefront.

Williams says the woman, a nanny that was out walking with two children, was trapped and pinned by the vehicle but was later freed.

“It appears as though an 82-year-old male that was driving the Nissan Pathfinder was attempting to park, from what we believe, mounted the curb and struck the woman that was pushing the stroller,” Williams said at the scene.

“The woman, in her 30s, we believe is a caregiver for the children.”

The two children, aged two and five, were also hurt as a result. Williams says their injuries are not serious and that the incident is being treated as an accident.

Williams says the woman is being described as a hero with reports that she pushed the stroller away from the vehicle.

“Everyone here is thankful that she took the actions that she did. Those children are so lucky and we’re glad they’re in hospital with only minor injuries.”

The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is “shaken up” and upset by what happened, Williams said.

Traffic services say the woman’s injuries are no longer considered serious and that her condition has improved. She remains in hospital for treatment.

Witness Katrina Sison says she and her fiancé were parked on St. Clair near Boon Avenue when the SUV went up on the curb and struck the woman pushing the double stroller.

“It was terrible, it was harrowing. The screams coming from the woman that was hit. It was a terrible experience,” she told 680 NEWS.

“We turned around and we had seen an older gentleman back into a woman on the sidewalk. She was walking with two kids that she nannied. She had gone right into the glass, it was terrible.”

Sison said a nearby doctor rushed to help the woman, who she described as a hero.

“Everyone had rushed to go help. There was probably 20 people just trying to go help.”
