Oshawa karate instructor arrested in ‘historic’ sexual assault investigation

By Lucas Casaletto

Durham police have arrested and charged a karate instructor from Oshawa in what the force called a historic sexual assault investigation.

Investigators said a 30-year-old man was arrested on Friday following allegations made by a victim, a teenager at the time, who said the sexual assaults took place between 2014 and 2015 at Team Canada Black Belt Institute on Ritson Road North in Oshawa, where the male suspect was an instructor.

He allegedly assaulted the female victim on multiple occasions.

30-year-old Matthew Mitchell of Oshawa is facing several charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference, and sexual exploitation.

He was released on an undertaking.

Investigators want to ensure there are no other victims and are urging anyone with information to contact the ‘Major Crime – Sexual Assault Unit.’
