Ontario reports over 3,000 COVID-19 cases for the 2nd day in a row

Ontario is reporting 3,128 cases of COVID-19 and 51 deaths with nearly 35,200 tests completed on Tuesday.

Locally, there are 778 new cases in Toronto, 614 in Peel, 213 in York Region, 172 in Durham, 151 in Middlesex-London and 151 in Hamilton.

The number is down slightly from the 3,270 cases reported by the province on Monday. Ontario reported a record 3,363 cases on Saturday.

The rolling seven-day average has climbed over 3,000 cases for the first time. The average sits at 3,065. This is the fourth time the province has reported over 3,000 daily cases.

Ontario is also reporting 51 new deaths, a jump from the 29 deaths reported on Monday.

The province’s test positivity rate remains above 9 per cent. Just the third day, and second straight day, that the provincial rate has been that high during the pandemic.

The province reported over 70,000 completed tests just four days ago and those numbers have gone down each day since. Ontario reported nearly 50,000 tests on Sunday and nearly 40,000 on Monday.

Of the new deaths, 22 come from residents of long-term care homes. New cases in long-term care homes nearly doubled from Monday’s report. There are 142 new cases from residents and 45 from staff.

The province administered an additional 7,607 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, the most so far in a 24 hour period. The total vaccinations in the province have now surpassed 50,000.

There are 2,015 more resolved cases.

There is now a total of 197,360 confirmed cases in the province since the onset of the pandemic with 4,730 deaths. Of the confirmed cases 25,840 are active and 166,790 have been resolved.

Among active cases, 1,347 people are currently in the hospital. This number is up 157 patients from a day earlier. Hospitalizations have increased by over 300 in the last seven days.

Among the hospitalized, 352 are in the ICU and 245 are on ventilators. The number of ICU patients is up 19 from a day ago.

Overall, the GTA reports fewer cases, 1,905, than the 2,079 cases reported a day ago. The GTA is responsible for 61 per cent of the province’s new daily cases compared to 64 per cent a day ago.

Toronto saw a drop in cases, down to 778 after a spike of 917 on Monday. Peel increased to 614 from 581 and York Region sharply fell to 213 from 389.

Meanwhile, Durham and Halton cases increased from a day ago. Durham up to 172 from 122 and Halton up to 128 from 70.
