The official start of winter is less than a week away but the frigid weather has already moved into the GTA.

A winter weather travel advisory is in effect for Halton-Peel and Hamilton due to the possible of snow.

“A narrow band of lake effect snow has developed over western Lake Ontario and is expected to move inland early this morning. This band will be over the Burlington area early this morning and slowly shift northwards reaching the southwestern section of the City of Toronto by mid morning,” Environment Canada said in its advisory.

The national weather agency said around five to 10 centimetres of snow are possible for the affected areas.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and be prepare for quickly changing driving conditions.

The cold also moved into the region late Tuesday. Environment Canada said the chilly air will feel close to -15 C for the majority of the day on Wednesday.

Due to the colder temperatures, the City of Toronto has opened four warming centres, including 129 Peter St., 5800 Yonge Street, Exhibition Place, and Scarborough Civic Centre.

Typically the city waits until an extreme cold weather alert is issued but has decided to be proactive since it’s the first spell of cold weather of the season.

The warming centres will remain open around the clock until Friday at noon.

Outreach workers will be on the job to encourage people living outside to come indoors and will also hand out blankets and sleeping bags.

“Residents should contact 311 if they see a person experiencing homelessness in need of assistance and the City will dispatch an outreach team to investigate,” the city said.

“If the person is in distress or needs immediate assistance, call 911.”
