Ontario reports a decrease in COVID-19 cases with more testing

Ontario is reporting 1,780 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

This is a slight decrease of the 1,824 cases reported on Thursday and comes with another increase in testing.

The province reports over 56,000 completed tests which is more than 4,000 more than reported on Thursday. Completed test numbers are up nearly 25,000 from just three days ago.

The seven day provincial average decreased slightly to 1,757.

There are 25 new deaths reported. Up from the 14 reported on Thursday but less than the spike of 35 deaths reported two days ago.

15 of the 25 deaths come from residents in long-term care homes.

There are 1,553 more resolved cases.

There is now a total of 123,526 confirmed cases in the province since the onset of the pandemic with 3,737 deaths. Of the confirmed cases 18,734 are active and 104,792 have been resolved. Active cases increase by 227 from a day ago.

The number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU across the province has crossed the 200 threshold for the first time since the first wave in the spring.

Among active cases, 674 people are currently in the hospital, this is an increase from 666 the day before. Among the hospitalized, 207 are in the ICU and 116 are on ventilators. The number of patients in the ICU jumped up 12 for the second day in the row.

More than half of all new cases in the province continue to come from people under the age of 40.

Locally, there are 633 new cases in Toronto, 433 in Peel and 152 in York Region.

Toronto sees another sharp spike in cases after reporting less than 400 one day ago. The city reported a record 727 cases three days ago.

Peel drops over 150 cases after reporting a single-day record of 592 on Thursday. Daily cases in York Region drop for the second straight day.

Durham Region increased to 94 cases from 57 on Thursday. Halton Region reported a drop to 51 after reporting 68 a day ago.

Overall daily cases in the GTA increased by 63 from a day earlier.

 

COVID-19 in schools

The province reported 129 new cases in schools. This is a slight increase from the 122 cases the day before. Schools reported a record 299 new cases three day ago.

Among the new cases in schools, 102 are related to students, while 27 are linked to staff.

776 schools in the province currently have a reported case which is up slightly from 755 a day earlier. Eight schools in Ontario are currently closed as a result of COVID-19. Up from five the previous day.
