Raptors’ Siakam shuts down reporter that said Toronto ‘surprisingly’ won NBA title

By Lucas Casaletto

Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam wasn’t too enamored with how a reporter framed a question posed to him on Thursday.

Courtesy of a video by Aaron Rose of Sports Illustrated, the reporter is heard starting his question by saying a couple of years ago, the Raptors “surprisingly” won the 2019 NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors.

“Surprisingly? What does that even mean,” Siakam interjects.

After finishing the 2018/19 season first in the Eastern Conference with 58 wins, the Raptors beat the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers (thanks to Kawhi Leonard’s infamous shot), Milwaukee Bucks, and Warriors en route to the team’s first-ever title.

Leonard was named NBA Finals MVP for his efforts.

At the time, Siakam said the championship was “a dream come true” expressing his love for the team and diversity of the city of Toronto.

Without Leonard who left for Los Angeles as a free agent, the Raptors followed up their championship with 53 wins in the shortened NBA season, eventually losing to the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi Finals.
