Police in Hamilton have charged a 28-year-old man after he allegedly struck and killed an 11-year-old boy who was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk.

The incident occurred on Upper Gage Avenue at Royal Vista Drive around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers said the boy was walking with the help of a crossing guard when a driver ran a red light and struck the child.

The 11-year-old was rushed to hospital with critical injuries where he was later pronounced dead.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) identified the boy as Jude Strickland.

“Words fail us as we express our empathy for what Jude Strickland’s family and loved ones are going through. Our thoughts are with them,” the post read.

Jude’s father, Jamie Strickland, published a photo of his son on social media, with the caption reading in part:

“It is with immense sadness that Vanessa and I share with you all the news that our dear, sweet Jude passed away, just after midnight this morning. This is the most heart breaking thing we have ever experienced. Just this past Tuesday morning we were shoveling snow together before school, and now he is gone.

We are grateful beyond words for your all your love and support over these past days. We read all your messages and are thankful for them, even if we do not respond.”

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 28-year-old Brandon Aubert of Hamilton, was arrested and has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact investigators.
