Brampton teen that got his dying wish of meeting LeBron James has died

By Michael Ranger

A Brampton teen, whose dying wish was meet and shake hands with LeBron James, has died following a battle with cancer.

In May 2019, at the age of 17, Corey Groves was diagnosed with stage four sarcoma cancer. He was given a year to live by doctors.

After finding out he was sick, the longtime Los Angeles Lakers fan was granted one wish by the Children’s Wish Foundation. He made it his dying wish to meet and shake hands with his basketball idol.

With the help of Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia, the Lakers organization and a GoFund Me page setup to help cover expenses, the wish came true.

Groves was able to travel to Los Angeles to watch the Lakers play the L.A. Clippers on Christmas day last year.

Before the game he got to shake hands with his hero.

The Groves’ family confirmed that Corey passed away this past Halloween in a post to his Instagram page on Monday.

“Corey was a stand up boy, a scholar and a gentleman,” the post reads.

In addition to referencing his meeting with James the post goes on to thank Bhatia for helping “make his dream come true.”

“His only wish was to shake the hands of his hero. Corey is and will always be our hero!”
