One day after a report revealed startling COVID-19 positivity rates in the city’s northwest, the numbers out of a Scarborough hospital are raising concerns about the pandemic picture in the city’s east end.

The Scarborough Health Network’s hospitals are seeing about 154 new COVID-19 cases per day, based on about 1,100 swabs.

If that is the case, this hospital system, which takes in a number of facilities from across Scarborough, would account for about one quarter of Toronto’s daily cases reported to public health.

The Toronto Star reports this information came from an internal presentation to hospital leadership.

The SNH is also reportedly dealing with multiple school outbreaks, as well as dealing with high virus spread in long-term care homes.

All of this is causing some to wonder if Scarborough is an underreported GTA hotspot, and if more resources are necessary to calm down the spread of the virus in this area of the city.

An anonymous health worker at the SNH told the Toronto Star that they need help, and an associate professor in the Department of Health and Society at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus told the paper the situation is serious.
