Police confirm 12-year-old boy critically injured in North York shooting has died

The 12-year-old boy who was critically injured by a stray bullet in a shooting in North York over the weekend has died of his injuries.

The boy was walking with his mother on a sunny Saturday afternoon and struck by a stray bullet near Jane and Stong court — just north of Finch.

A hail of gunfire, that police have since confirmed was related to gang activity, also resulted in three men being shot. One of the bullets flew across the street, fatally injuring the boy.

Five days later, Toronto police have confirmed with 680 NEWS the child has passed away in hospital surround by his family.

In an update, police chief James Ramer said officers have upgraded charges laid against 24-year-old Rashawn Chambers and 25-year-old Jahwayne Smart to include first-degree murder.

Smart faces as many as 30 charges while Chambers faces 29 charges. Police said they’re also searching for a potential third suspect, a driver, who also faces a first-degree murder charge.

On Monday night, police tracked down two suspects to a Canadian Tire store downtown.

Smart is slated to make a court appearance on Nov. 24 while Chambers will appear in court on Dec. 9.
