Body found of man missing after Alaska boat overturned

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Alaska search and rescue team recovered the body of one of two men who were reported missing after a gold mining dredge vessel overturned in high waves outside of Nome.

Nome Fire Chief Jim West Jr. said the search for a second missing man will continue, The Anchorage Daily News reported Monday.

A searcher found the body washed ashore about 8 miles (13 kilometres) west of the boat debris Sunday. The deceased man was not immediately identified.

The 32-foot (10-meter) boat overturned Thursday night on the way to Nome’s harbour from a mining area, authorities said.

One of the three men on board reached shore in a raft and was found along a highway. He was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia.

All three men were described as being in their 60s.

Searchers checked cabins near shore to see if the others sought shelter and then walked the area throughout the weekend.

The Coast Guard searched by air, but heavy winds and high surf prevented the agency from looking by boat, West said.

Rescuers used a backhoe Friday to pull the boat ashore but neither of the missing men were inside, West said.
