Advocates calling on City to install more speed cameras

Some advocates are calling on the City to install more photo-radar cameras, as new numbers reveal, the devices caught thousands of speeders this summer.

There are 50 cameras in operation right now, including one on Renforth Drive in Etobicoke, where residents offered their full support.

One resident said, “any deterrent is better than nothing, the police have their hands full trying to slow the speeding on the streets, it’s become a problem,” another said “it keeps people in check, keeps the neighbourhood safe.”

Tens of thousands of fines have been sent out since the cameras starting issuing tickets back in July.

One driver calls it a costly lesson if you’re going too fast in school zones, “as long as I’m smart and I’m following the speed laws, then I don’t need to worry about that.”

Speeding tickets vary in amounts, but can cost hundreds of dollars.

The City has no plans to buy more cameras yet, Mayor John Tory said he wants to see if they’re having any effect in reducing speeds, and that involves months of data.
