Weekend road and transit closures

By News Staff

Here’s what you need to know this weekend for getting around the city.

ActiveTO

It’s the last weekend for the ActiveTO Weekend Road Closures.

This weekend, closures will be in place from Saturday at 6 a.m. until Sunday at 11 p.m.

  • Lake Shore Boulevard West (eastbound lanes only) from Windermere Avenue to Stadium Road.
  • The eastbound Gardiner Expressway off ramp to Lake Shore Boulevard West (exit #146) will also be closed.
  • Bayview Avenue from Front Street East to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview Avenue.

Parking lots at Sunnyside Park, Budapest Park, and Sir Casimir Gzowski Park, along Lake Shore Boulevard West, will also be off-limits. Overnight parking is not allowed in these lots and any vehicles should be moved before midnight on Friday. If you’re planning to use those roads should access them by bike or on foot as nearby parking is limited and there is no on-site parking.

The city attempted to measure how many people participated in the ActiveTO program. The averages (on sunny days) are listed below:

  • 18,000 cyclists and 4,000 pedestrians on Lake Shore Boulevard West
  • 6,300 cyclists and 5,700 pedestrians on Lake Shore Boulevard East
  • 2,000 cyclists and 300 pedestrians on Bayview Avenue.
  • 1,900 cyclists and 250 pedestrians on the adjacent Don Valley Trail (eight-hour counts)

Yonge Street Closures on Sunday

Two portions of Yonge Street will also close on Sunday morning and early afternoon as a late edition to the Active T.O. program. Vehicle access to Yonge Street will be restricted starting as early as 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the latest.

  • Yonge Street from Gerrard Street to The Esplanade (northbound and southbound lanes).
  • Yonge Street from The Esplanade to Queens Quay (northbound lanes only).

Gardiner Limitations on Saturday

The Eastbound Gardiner Expressway from Yonge Street to Cherry Street will be down to a single lane for construction on Saturday starting at 6 a.m. until Sunday at the same time, and as a result, the Active T.O. closure planned on Lake Shore Boulevard East (Leslie St. to Woodbine Ave) will not be in place.

Line 1 Subway Closure

There will be no subway service all weekend between Finch and Eglinton stations on the Yonge portion of Line-1, the Yonge-University-Spadina line.

It’s for scheduled signal upgrades.

Shuttle buses will be operating along Yonge Street.

Weather: Hot & Mainly Sunny

High temperatures could reach 26 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday, and the humidex could hit 30.

The humidity will be gone by Monday, with a high near 21 degrees expected.

The average high for this time of year is 19 degrees.
