Two federal by-elections in Toronto set for late October

Voters in two Toronto ridings will be heading to the polls next month.

In a statement Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced two federal by-elections will be held on October 26th.

The by-elections will fill vacancies in the ridings of York Centre and Toronto Centre.

Toronto Centre was left vacant by former Liberal finance minister Bill Morneau, after he resigned in the wake of the WE controversy. Morneau won the riding by a landslide in 2019, taking 57% of the vote.

York Centre was vacated by Liberal MP Michael Levitt, who resigned on September 1st to become President and CEO of the Canadian Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies. Levitt won the riding by just under 6,000 votes over Conservative challenger Rachel Willson in 2019.

These will not be the first Canadian elections during the pandemic.

Voters went to the polls in New Brunswick to elect a new provincial government earlier this month.

Elections Canada says it will adjust its protocols at polling stations to make sure voters can stay safe as they cast their ballots.
