A 31-year-old Markham man is facing charges after allegedly pointing a laser pen at a police helicopter.
York Regional Police say they were in the area of Brimley Road and Denison Street in Markham in the early hours of Sept. 6th carrying out a suspected impaired driving investigation when the incident occurred.
They say the helicopter pilot and officer on board were struck with the laser pointer more than once.
Police determined the laser was coming from a backyard in the area and officers on the ground located the suspect and arrested him.
Police want to remind the public that laser pointers can be a serious safety issue for pilots and also endangers those on the ground.
Health Canada says high-powered handheld lasers and laser pointers can cause temporary and/or permanent eye damage or blindness.
