Environment Canada issues heat warning for Toronto

By News Staff

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto, calling for “uncomfortable” conditions towards the end of the weekend and start of next week.

The national weather service says the heat event will begin Saturday with highs of 30 to 31 degrees and lows barely breaking the 20 degree mark.

“Sunday and Monday will feel particularly uncomfortable with highs in the low thirties and humidex values of 40.”

Environment Canada says relief from the heat and humidity will not come before Tuesday when cooler and less humid air is forecast to arrive.

The city says it will open 14 Emergency Cooling Centres starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and for the duration o the heat event.

The centres offer a publicly accessible, air-conditioned place for residents who do not have access to a cool space and cannot keep cool in their home or outdoors. To find the closest cooling centre near you, you can consult the city’s website.

Strict infection prevention and control measures will be in place at all centres to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Face coverings are mandatory, with some exceptions, at all cooling centres. A mask will be provided to those without one who want to enter.

The city is also extending the hours at seven outdoor pools starting tomorrow. These include:

  • Alex Duff Pool
  • Earlscourt Park/Giovanni Caboto Pool
  • McGregor Park
  • Monarch Park
  • Parkway Forest
  • Smithfield Park
  • Sunnyside Park/Gus Ryder Pool
