Four people are injured after a wheel came off a tractor-trailer on Highway 401 in Scarborough.

The tractor-trailer was travelling eastbound near McCowan Road around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, when the wheel became separated from the truck and bounced into the westbound express lanes.

A vehicle then hit the wheel, causing a chain-reaction crash. Five vehicles were damaged.

Provincial police said two 17-year-old girls suffered serious injuries. Two other people have minor injuries.

The tractor-trailer was located at a warehouse in Pickering. The driver has been charged with wheel separation.
