More roads closed this weekend to traffic for pedestrians and cyclists

By news staff

It’s shaping up to be the warmest weekend of this year and as the battle to stop the spread of coronavirus continues, the city is freeing up more space outdoors for cyclist and pedestrians.

With daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday expected near 22 C — plus a humidex on Sunday making it feel closer to 26 C — another three major road closures are planned this weekend to provide Torontonians with more space to physically distance while outdoors.

From 6 a.m. Saturday until 11 p.m. Sunday, the eastbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard East will be closed from Coxwell Avenue to just south of Woodbine Avenue.

Eastbound Lake Shore Boulevard West from Windermere Avenue to Stadium Road will also be closed. The eastbound Gardner Expressway off-ramp to Lake Shore at Park Lawn will will also be off limits.

Bayview Avenue from Mill Street to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview will also be blocked to vehicles.

Along with the major road closures, ActiveTO also includes 57 kilometres of Quiet Streets across the GTA.

Quiet Streets are shared space that allows local residents to maintain physical distancing within their communities through the installation of signage and temporary barricades to encourage slow, local vehicle access only.

The warm weather doesn’t end on the weekend. Monday and Tuesday are expected to see daytime highs in the mid 20s, with humidity making it feel above 30.
