At least 2 suspects wanted in deadly North Etobicoke tow-truck shooting

By News Staff

Toronto police have identified one of two suspects wanted in for the fatal shooting in North Etobicoke Thursday evening.

On Thursday, police said there were called at around 7:42 p.m. to attend the area of Panorama Court and Kipling Avenue for a report of gunfire.

When officers arrived, police said they found 23-year-old Hashim Kinani, inside a tow-truck suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Hashim Kinani, 23, was killed on May 14, 2020.

Life-saving measures were performed at the scene and he was transported to a trauma centre, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said witnesses reported three males were seen fleeing the area on foot.

Toronto police say one of the suspects is a 17-year-old. He, along with another unidentified man, are both wanted for first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Both are considered armed, violent and dangerous.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Ted Lioumanis said there was some sort of altercation and they believe the victim was targeted. It’s not known whether the suspects knew the victim at this time.

Lioumanis tells CityNews they do not believe the homicide is related to any tow truck turf war. The victim was a tow truck driver, but there’s no indication he was responding to a call.

“From my understanding, from what I can see so far in this investigation, it has nothing to do with that,” said Lioumanis.

Hashim’s family said they tried to warn police that he was in danger several times. “We called the police three times, four times and they didn’t do anything,” said his brother Mohammed Hashim.

Mohammad told CityNews there was a gang that was harassing Hashim and they killed him over a fight that happened a month or two ago. He adds they were told by police before that there wasn’t enough evidence to do anything.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police directly or can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

This is Toronto’s 27th homicide of 2020.
