Jesse Ketchum daycare reopens after coronavirus outbreak

By News staff

A city-run daycare where 13 staff members and seven children tested positive for the novel coronavirus reopened on Thursday.

The outbreak at Jesse Ketchum Early Learning and Child Care Centre was first reported on April 28 after four staff members and an 8-month old baby tested positive for COVID-19.

The childcare centre at Bay Street and Davenport Road is one of seven city-run emergency centres kept open for essential workers. All of the workers have since been tested for COVID-19.

It was closed for a two-week period starting April 29.

Three rooms in the daycare centre have now reopened, accommodating up to 21 children. The regular capacity of the centre is 58 children.

The city says in the coming weeks, two more rooms will be open to allow for 30 children in total to attend.

Several additional measures have been put in place as well, according to a release from the city.

Staff will be required to wear surgical masks when a two metre distance cannot be maintained along with daily screening of both staff and the children. There will also be increased disinfection and reduced group sizes.

A deep clean of the facility also took place while the daycare was closed.
