SIU investigating after male killed near Jane and Finch

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a 30-year-old man was shot and killed during an interaction with police on Thursday.

Toronto police were called to a Best Western Hotel on Norfinch Drive just east of Highway 400 just after 12 p.m. following reports of a man in a car armed with a knife and gun.

When police arrived they approached the vehicle of interest and the man exited the car.

“There was an interaction and the officer discharged his firearm multiple times, resulting in the man being struck,” the SIU said in a statement.

A victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A wintess who was working at the hotel tells 680 NEWS he saw what he believed to be a plainclothes officer with his gun drawn on what appeared to be a man who was on the ground, “but I couldn’t tell because I think it was behind a car.” Moments after that, he says, a number of police officers arrived on the scene.

Police say officers were involved in the shooting, but released no further details due to the SIU’s involvement in the case.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
